Website Developmemt

How we built the website

This website was inspired by the activity of four Explorers from the Newark Raptors ESU. They undertook a programme of learning the key web development tools and programming languages over a 10 week period.

The sessions covered are documented at the development support site

These included:

  • Hyper Text Mark Up Language (HTML)
  • Cascading Style Sheets (CSS)
  • Chrome Dev Tools
  • Code Validation Tools
An online tool called Glitch enabled the Explorers to try out their coding for HTML and CSS and example of which can be seen here

WordPress was chosen as the content management system to be used for the new website and the Explorers were taught how to use this and for practice developed their own test sites.

WordPress is the most popular website management system used by more than 60 million websites which is free and open-sourced.

Example Websites

For design the group looked at a number of other District websites and reviewed them against key criteria including:

  • scout branding
  • content
  • navigation
  • responsiveness
The aim was to incorporate the best of these and more.
WordPress on its own is very limited in providing a fully a customisable website. However various plugins can be added that improve functionality. Elementor was chosen as the page builder for its ease of use and advanced features. Additional plugins were added to provide simple membership, ssl certification, cookie consent and site backup scheduling.

The development of this website is ongoing so expect to see changes in future weeks and months.
